We have state-of-the-art image processing systems that can generate visual
images of any visual material on dual PC computers (dual processor systems
with 1 gb ram). This system is video based and uses nearly 5122
images. The video pictures can be obtained stereoscopically and then are
used for fully automated particle tracking in a three-dimensional flow field.
Nearly 4000 images can be taken at the full 60 Hz rate which is the same
as a 100 ft roll of movie film. Smaller size images can be taken up to 200
Hz (1/4 size images).
A second dual camera high-speed system is also available. This new system
can take images at 500 Hz, but the number of images is much less because
of camera memory limitations.
The laboratory is also well-equipped with standard instrumentation for
fluid mechanics research, such as a laser Doppler velocimeter system. A
number of special flow systems are available: opposed-jet mixing, rotational
convective view of a conventional mixer configuration, pipe flow, boundary
layer, linear Couette (moving walls), and a four-roll mill for elongational
flows. |
